Rowhouse Reno: phase #1

I desire part of our reno budget plan included a great house away from home, however we don’t have that luxury. We still requirement to be close to work as well as we have to keep costs down. So we have made a decision to online in our home while it’s being gutted. The great thing is that the front of the home (the 100+ years old part) is in quite great shape as well as it will be part of phase #3. considering that we are already utilized to small-space living after costs a year in our condo, we are going to seal ourselves into the front living space as well as dining space as well as make it a mini-condo. two rooms, two adults as well as one cat. (If you missed my very first publish of before photos, click here.)

We are heading into reno phase #1 which includes this to-do list:

Make the home clean, risk-free as well as odour-free.

Waterproof the basement.

Build a new basement bathroom.

Replace all the knob as well as tube wiring.

Clean all the ducts as well as set up a new furnace.

Replace a support beam in our basement that had to be partially removed.

In preparation for this phase, we went directly to work doing what we might do ourselves as well as produced our small living space.

Chore 1: peel off all the wallpaper.

Wallpaper takes in a great deal of smoke odour, as well as getting rid of it made a genuine difference. then I started priming all the spaces to lighten up the house. I can’t truly believe directly up until all my walls are white.

Chore 2: Rip up carpet.

We got rid of all the rugs in the house. We were extremely delighted to discover charming hardwood in fantastic condition underneath.

Chore 3: Take down old window coverings.

We then took down the valances as well as old metal blinds. Anything to get some light in!

Chore 4: opening up the living as well as dining space into one huge room.

This is the door between the living space as well as dining space where we will be living for the next 6-12 months. It was totally drywalled over.

Thankfully, they were simple — as well as satisfying — to remove. I really like the washed-out colours as well as patina on them, so we’ve kept them away intending to discover a location for them in the home one day.

Chore 5: producing a semi-working kitchen area (it’s like we’re camping).

The cupboard doors were covered in grease as well as filth. Although I’m trying to recycle things from the old house, the cupboards didn’t make the cut. The old brown fridge was rusting inside as well as made random horrific noises. So we gotten a bit bar fridge for our momentary kitchen area set-up. open shelving is absolutely on pattern right?

I still cook — even under these conditions. Food is kept away from the dust (the painter tape labels seemed relevant) as well as we chosen up a bit induction cooktop. I’ve ended up being a master of one-pot meals.

The next publish will show you the results of our phase #1 reno! stay tuned for it on June 19th!
